Wanted: Working Students

Ames Explorer - jumping LKnow anyone in the Bismarck area who might be interested in joining our team? We have working student positions available and are looking to trade lessons for help with morning stable work. This could be a great fit for a mom after she sees the kids off to school, a college student or someone looking to re-connect with the horse world. We offer a friendly environment, flexible hours and lessons from FEI-level trainers on either our school horses or your own.

While we have a broad background in many disciplines (Dressage, Western, English, Hunter/Jumper) Prairie Rose Training Center specializes in breeding, training and showing nationally competitive sport horses for dressage.

Position Information:

We are seeking 2-3 people to help with stable work throughout the week in exchange for lessons from Karla and Mimi Stanley, FEI-level trainers.

In return for this work, we will provide lessons to our working students in Classical Dressage, Western Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Basic Equitation (“Riding 101”) or 4-H-type events. Regardless of discipline, all our lessons begin with skill assessment, goal identification and helping students acquire a balanced, independent seat. In addition to the valuable education provided in riding lessons, our working students have the opportunity to learn about effective horsemanship, safety, feeding regimens, animal husbandry, barn management, handling for vet or farrier procedures, equine reproduction, horse psychology, basic handling, grooming, hand-walking and ground skills.

We are looking for someone who can provide 2-6 hours/day, available at least 3 days/week. Six hours of stable work per lesson to start. Working students who prove themselves competent after a training period have the opportunity to move to 5 hours of stable work per lesson and to do additional supervised practice rides on our horses at a rate of 2 hours stable work per ride.

Our ideal working student candidates are reliable, physically capable of stable work, can provide their own housing and transportation, have some previous experience with horses and have a strong interest in advancing their riding and horsemanship skills.
